Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that originated over 2000 years ago. It involves inserting ultra-thin, metallic needles into specific parts of the body for therapeutic and health promoting effects.

The practice of acupuncture is based on the principles of Qi (pronounced chee). Qi refers to the flow of vital energy in the body through channels or meridians. If a problem occurs, energy, which is normally free flowing, is slowed down or becomes stagnated. By stimulating appropriate points on the body, acupuncture is thought to release these blockages and promote healing.

Acupuncture in Vigor Physiotherapy is used together with more traditional, conventional physiotherapy treatments such as manual therapy and exercise. It’s what we call an integrated approach to your treatment - the use of a combination of techniques to manage pain and inflammation, in order to encourage healing and recovery. It’s a means by which we can provide the best treatment possible for your condition.

Acupuncture is used in the treatment of:

  • Acute and chronic injuries.
  • Arthritis and rheumatism.
  • Back pain.
  • Neck pain.
  • Whiplash.
  • Headaches.
  • Migraines.
  • Joint pain.
  • Sports injuries.
  • Women’s health.

The needles used in acupuncture are single-use, individually packaged, pre-sterilised needles which are disposed of after use. There are high standards which have to be met, therefore ensuring that acupuncture practised by our physiotherapists is safe and effective.
